Class Descriptions

Sport Horse Versatility - These classes are designed to promote the developing and competing of horses who are willing partners, better prepared for life, refined in their responsiveness and confident of their abilities...in and out of the arena. SHV is a two phase test comprised of a Refined Riding Phase, which is currently a dressage test of choice (tests must be chosen from correlating levels) and a Working Phase which is an obstacle course. The Working Phase will be ridden outdoors in a natural setting. No jumping is required. See descriptions of SHV levels below. Classes may be combined for placing at the show managements discretion. Additional information about Sport Horse Versatility is available at www.HyCourtFarm.com or www.SportHorseVersatility.com

**NEW** Introductory SHV is the most basic test of horsemanship. In the Working Phase, a simple course of 6-9 obstacles will be ridden in a natural setting at the walk and trot. No jumping is required. The working phase will be judged on the rider’s display of accuracy, thoughtful presentation of obstacles to the horse and overall smoothness of the course. For the Refined Riding Phase, rider can select a test of choice from either Intro or Training Level.

**NEW** Intermediate SHV is a somewhat more challenging test of horsemanship and developing skills. In the Working Phase, a course of 7-10 obstacles will be ridden in a natural setting. Course may include walk, trot and canter but no jumping will be required. Emphasis at this level of versatility will be on advancement of skills demonstrated in Intro level and an understanding of the more technical, accurate aspects of horsemanship. In the Refined Riding phase, riders can select a test of choice from First or Second Level.

Hunter Versatility - A two phase test comprised of a Rideability Phase, similar to an under-saddle class on the flat, and a Working Phase which is an obstacle/jumping course. Three classes will be offered; Suitability and Class A will exhibit at a walk and trot only. Class B will exhibit at a walk, trot and canter. Horse/rider teams may not cross enter levels of Hunter Versatility, or may show Hors Concours at the higher level.

In the Rideability Phase, riders will present their horse at the specified gaits. Judging will be on general way of going suitable for a field hunter, smoothness of transitions, manners and quietness. Riders may be asked to individually rein back or perform simple movements.

In the Working Phase, riders will compete over a natural hunt course with undulating terrain. Riders will be asked to jump and perform tasks as though in the hunt field. The obstacles can include crossing shallow water and jumping narrow fences. Suitability will have crossrails for fences. Class A - maximum height of fences 2’ Class B - maximum height of fences 2’6”

In-Hand Versatility - Exhibitors will show their horses in-hand over a course of 6-9 obstacles at a walk and trot. See Sport Horse Versatility Working Phase. Open to yearlings and up. Horses may be shown in a suitable bridle or leather, nylon or rope halter. Stud chains are not permitted. Handlers may carry a dressage whip/crop.

Dressage tests from Intro through Fourth Level are available.

Prix Caprilli provides an opportunity for the horse and rider to demonstrate elementary skills in dressage and jumping. The horse must softly accept the bit and may show more roundness in the parts of the test separate from the jumps. Trot work to be done posting. Refusals will be penalized as an error of course. Knockdowns will be penalized at the judge’s discretion.
